In my last blog entry I talked about how I teach my students to draw and then shave a cylinder at the end of a small piece of Basswood in preparations four forming a sphere. This is part of their platonic solids main lesson class. After the cylinder has been shaved we first carve away the so-called northern hemisphere of the sphere and then deal with the southern hemisphere.

I ask my students to imagine seeing the northern hemisphere’s meridians and shave them one by one, rotating the workpiece, sighting and rounding away as needed,

Once the northern hemisphere is looking good we add a new baseline a tad below its original position at the “South pole” .

In order to carve the southern hemisphere the students will have to shave from the equator down to the South Pole and from the new baseline towards Antarctica.

This exercise also allows them to feel and understand the advantage of working with the grain downhill versus making a mistake and trying to chip uphill.

Once the sphere is done the students design and add notches or other carving augmentations to further develop the project. As you can see the students created a few interesting shapes including abstract human shapes.

Next time I will show my students next projects - carving animals out of basswood.
